Haiti Earthquake Relief

Those of us who live in earthquake-prone areas know the power and destruction they can bring. The news and images of devastation from Haiti are overwhelming. As Californians, Americans, and fellow citizens of the world it's our duty to step up and help at times like this.

Valley Grassroots is asking you to contribute to Direct Relief International's relief fund to help provide medical and other aid directly to the victims of the earthquake. They have an ongoing humanitarian effort in Haiti and already have the network to distribute the aid. They are based in Santa Barbara and receive top marks for efficiency and low overhead.

Please go to http://dri.convio.net/goto/vgfdhaiti to make your tax-deductible contribution today. You can also contribute $10 by texting GIVE10 to 20222 and the donation will be added to your cell phone bill. Funds will go directly to DRI and will be put to use immediately.

Community Service Opportunities

AIDS Project Los Angeles' Necessities of Life Food Bank
Founded in 1986, APLA’s Necessities of Life Program is the nation’s largest food pantry for people with HIV/AIDS. Groceries and other items are bagged at the main distribution center in North Hollywood for distribution to clients throughout Los Angeles County.

VGFD has committed volunteers for the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm to help bag groceries in North Hollywood. Our next scheduled date is January 17. We need 10 people per month on an ongoing basis. More information about the food bank is at http://apla.org/programs/nolp.html

Blood Drive
We are gauging the interest of a blood drive in conjunction with Providence Health System.

If you are interested in helping with the food bank or blood drive, please contact Tauby at rosstauby@yahoo.com
